La Sagrada Família

WordPress Daily Prompt
Anachronism (noun): an error in chronology; a person or thing that’s chronologically out of place. Write a story in which a person or thing is out of place, or recount a time when you felt out of place. Photographers, artists, poets: show us ANACHRONISM.”

There is no better way to display anachronism than with the La Sagrada Família cathedral in Barcelona, Spain (Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family). Left unfinished by Antoni Gaudi, old and new are built into one big cathedral, with two distinct architectural styles. It is of yet unfinished, hoping the project will be completed in time for the centennial of Gaudi’s death.

“Though construction of Sagrada Família had commenced in 1882, Gaudí became involved in 1883, taking over the project and transforming it with his architectural and engineering style—combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. Gaudí devoted his last years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Sagrada Família’s construction progressed slowly, as it relied on private donations and was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War—only to resume intermittent progress in the 1950s. Construction passed the midpoint in 2010.” (with thanks to Wikipedia)

I visited Sagrada Familia about a month & a half ago and it was massive–one of the most visually striking churches in all of Europe. Walking out of a metro and seeing this right before my eyes was breathtaking. Really appreciated looking through your photos, great shots!

Thank you Beliz! It is a great piece of architecture; almost alien. I will never remember seeing the new part of it, the hug dark green doors with words in it… stunning!
