MS News: September 2013

Just because multiple sclerosis too often has a negative undertone, here is some good news that was published online lately!

  1. Gene discovery!
Gene discovery is major step towards finding cure for multiple sclerosis, researchers believe.
  2. Brand new helmet!
Harding, the Minnesota Wild backup best known as the winner of the 2013 Masterton Trophy for his courageous fight against Multiple Sclerosis, has a history of working up some pretty sweet helmets with artist Todd Miska.
  3. Vitamin D: reverse or halt?
In search of a better option for MS patients, a team of University of Wisconsin-Madison biochemists has discovered a promising vitamin D-based treatment that can halt — and even reverse — the course of the disease in a mouse model of MS.
  4. Myeling restauration in mice
Preliminary data suggesting that the compound, called NDC-1308, is able to restore and repair in mice the protective myelin coating surrounding nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. The grant will help Endece repeat the testing that lead to that data.
  5. MS Society gives $7!
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has just committed $7 million to support 15 new research projects focusing on innovative approaches to repair the coating of myelin that protects nerve fibers and which is destroyed by the MS disease process.
  6. Irish scientist wins!
Dr Eric Downer has received a Neuroscience Ireland Early Career Investigator Award for his pioneering research into the cannabinoid system and how it can contribute to treating Multiple Sclerosis.
  7. Lemtrada in EU!
Lemtrada, a treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS), has received EU marketing authorisation. The drug is intended for adult patients with relapsing remitting MS (RRMS), with active disease defined by clinical or imaging features.
  8. Criminal Minds star helps!
Shemar Moore, who plays Derek Morgan on the hit CBS show Criminal Minds, is a busy man. Healthline caught up with him between shooting an episode of the show and live-tweeting the Season 9 premiere Wednesday night. He spoke candidly about his mother, Marilyn, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1998, and his upcoming Bike MS ride with the Criminal Minds team.
  9. New research center opens!
The new center will study how best to improve the thinking, learning and memory of individuals with multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury. It will also study mobility and nerve regeneration in people with spinal cord injury, the spatial perception of stroke survivors and the cognitive effects of chemotherapy.
  10. New ways to find molecular markers!
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine scientists have developed a novel molecular probe detectable by positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. The new molecular marker, MeDAS, offers the first non-invasive visualization of myelin integrity of the entire spinal cord at the same time, as published today in an article in the Annals of Neurology.
