9/11 Heroes

WordPress Daily Prompt: Heroic
When you were five years old, who was your hero? What do you think of that person today? Photographers, artists, poets: show us a HERO.

The word “hero” is often misused, declaring actors, singers or other people as the one we have all been waiting for. We attribute them talent, Zeus-like gifts or other “meaningful” characteristics we do not know if they are real once that person closes the front door behind him/her.

Real heroes are at work every day: firemen, doctors and nurses in over-crowded hospitals; just a normal person, saving a child from being run over by a car on the street… When I think of firemen, the first image that pops up in my mind is 9/11. The sacrifices they made, running up staircases 70 stories high, with heavy tools strapped to their backs and the guts to save people, knowing they might not make it out alive themselves.

This afternoon I stumbled upon a webpage showing staggering 9/11 photographs. When I noticed how tiny rescue workers were against the huge pile-up of wrought metal, human bodies and utter devastation, I realized once again what emergency workers, especially firemen, were up against. It’s almost too unreal to picture in your mind.

Heroes are born and made of people who are willing to go beyond what is asked of them to save lives. Heroes were born and died on 9/11.

The pictures I chose for this blog post are those of firefighters against the backdrop of falling skyscrapers, human loss and the moment the world stopped turning for a while. This is for them.

Oh same here! It’s easy being a hero if you only keeps your eyes open for celebrities and others who in reality, are just human also.
